What does it actually mean to use AI as a real business enabler, not just hype or fear?

In this episode of Values Beyond Time, I sit down with Nuno Oliveira and Paulo Ribeiro, co-founders of Hi Human, an AI automation agency based in Porto, helping SMEs implement AI thoughtfully, ethically, and in ways that actually move the business forward.

From their backgrounds in finance and digital transformation to building an AI partner for small and medium companies, Nuno and Paulo share a grounded, practical perspective on what it really takes to adopt AI without losing your company's human DNA.

We dive into how AI adoption actually starts inside a business, the biggest misconceptions SMEs have about cost and risk, and why honesty and quality are non-negotiable when recommending (or refusing) a solution.

If you are a founder, a business leader, or simply trying to separate the hype from what AI can really do for a company, this conversation is a practical, honest guide to getting started.

01
Why AI adoption should start with pain points, not tools.
02
The biggest misconception SMEs have about implementing AI.
03
How honesty and refusing bad-ROI projects builds long-term trust.
04
What separates a good AI partner from a forced sales pitch.
05
How Portugal's relationship with uncertainty shapes AI adoption.
06
The one human quality AI still can't replicate: intuition.
Start with your pain points, not with AI. Nuno and Paulo don't open with a tech pitch. Their first question to any company is what's actually slow, repetitive, or draining. If you're considering AI in your business, the starting point isn't a tool, it's naming the task nobody wants to do.
A three to four month sales cycle is normal, not a red flag. Nuno is upfront that decision-making takes time because most CEOs don't even know how much time their own teams lose to manual work until someone maps it out. If your AI rollout feels slow, that's the process working, not delaying.
The real blocker is usually messy data, not budget. Companies assume AI adoption needs a big investment. Nuno's experience says otherwise, what actually stops a company is outdated systems and unstructured data. Fix that first, and the cost conversation gets much easier.
Saying no to a bad-fit project can win you the next one. Paulo describes turning down work when the numbers didn't justify it and having that same client return weeks later with a project worth doing. Turning down easy revenue when it isn't the right fit builds the kind of trust that pays off later.
Whoever feels the pain becomes your best advocate. The person answering the same repetitive call twenty times a day is the one who will fight for change internally, not the CEO. If you're trying to get buy-in for a new tool at your own company, find the person doing the task, not just the person approving the budget.
AI is good at the rational call. People are still needed for the human one. Paulo draws a clear line: AI can weigh the numbers, but it still misses how a decision will land emotionally on the people affected by it. That's the part still worth doing yourself.
